Catalytic Converter

This is where the chemical reaction occurs. It converts toxic gas. A standard “cat”, required by EPA regulations, reduces CO, hydrocarbons and oxides of nitrogen. Every vehicle (after 1975) has a catalytic converter installed as a pollution control device. In other words, it’s good for the environment.

Manifold

This collects the exhaust from the cylinders and puts them into one pipe. Most manifolds are designed for cost effectiveness, not performance. They are designed for low production costs and to reduce space. A “header”, or “extractor” is an alternative product designed for performance only. Upgrading to a header increases performance, but costs more.

Exhaust System– In Las Vegas, rust isn’t a problem with a vehicle’s exhaust system. However, age and a few bumpy roads can cause your exhaust clamps to loosen. Sometimes your “check engine” light is sensing a malfunction with your catalytic converter. Your exhaust system really starts at the front of your car, right behind your engine. Exhaust manifolds connect to the cylinder heads, where they collect exhaust gases. As the gases move through the exhaust system, they’re first analyzed by oxygen sensors, then refined by the catalytic converter and, finally, muffled by the muffler.

So by the time those gases leave the vehicle, your emission system has made your car run smoother, cleaner, and quieter.

If a ‘cat’ goes bad, it can be the result of clogging or other fuel additives in the exhaust system. It can also be a result of the wrong mix of exhaust gasses, making your catalytic converter function improperly. Many cars will detect a malfunction and activate your check engine light.

What a Catalytic Converter Does

The combustion chamber of your car produces very harmful chemicals: Hydrocarbons, which produce smoke; Carbon monoxide, which is harmful to breathe; and Nitrogen Oxides, which cause acid rain.Since 1975, the EPA requires all cars to have a catalytic converter. These chemicals go into the catalytic converter and a chemical reaction occurs. They get “converted”, using a “catalyst”, into Carbon Dioxide, Nitrogen and Water. A lot of heat is required for the necessary reaction to occur, so the “cat” is always located toward the front of the car.
